About
Situated on a Baroque style castle once the summer residence of Duke Carl Eugen in 1763, the Akademie Schloss has two façades. One is open to the public and has a gallery for exhibitions, a laboratory for innovation and an arena for discourse. Then there is the Solitude, a retreat for art and living, with 45 furnished live/work studios, a lecture hall, workshops, computer stations, a library, a cafeteria and additional public areas.

Who Can Apply:
Fellowship (Residency) is open to applicants of all nationalities in the field of visual arts performing arts, design, literature, music/sound, video/film/media. Those above 35 years of age are required to have completed a university or college degree within the past five years. Currently enrolled university or college students are not eligible. Command of one of the following three languages is assumed – English, German or French.
Application deadline and fees:
The application round for 2017 takes place from September 1, 2016 to November 30, 2016. 50 to 70 fellowships are allocated every 24 months.
Residency Length:
Three to Twelve months, decided upon by the jury.
Residency Expectations:
It is expected that the resident artist spends at least two-thirds of their time at Akademie Schloss Solitude and that the project is completed within the residency duration.
Residency Fees:
None, admission by application and upon selection
Support for resident:
A shared apartment / studio, furnished and with electricity, water and heat (utilities are provided free). A stipend amounting to Euro 1,150 monthly. A one-time financial support for travelling to Stuttgart from place/country of residence and the return costs. Use of workshops (under the supervision of the technical director) are free for residents.
A supplement for so-called double housekeeping; Subsidy of freight cost for the transport of materials, tools and instruments to and from Stuttgart; a project promotion subsidy and a one-time materials subsidy; in the case of non-German guests (from non EU-countries), part of their health insurance expenses.
The Akademie may also offer additional financial support, depending on its available budget and at its discretion.
What the resident is expected to pay/arrange for him/herself:
Costs of the balance after partial financial support.
Additional Information
Akademie Schloss Solitude has a Digital Residency version called Digital Solitude. Receiver of the fellowship is not required to spend as much time (if at all) in the residency.
