The Guest Programme is a grant by the Goethe-Institut, Munich (GI) and the Zentrum Bundesrepublik Deutschland des Internationalen Theaterinstituts (ITI) [Federal Republic of Germany Centre of the International Theatre Institute] for the advancement of the theatre industry.

Who can apply

Directors, literary managers, set designers, assistants from the fields of acting and musical theatre as well as choreographers. The age limit is 40 years of age. Students, theatre scientists and critics are not considered for the grant. Priority to candidates from developing countries, including Malaysia.

Application deadline

At least 3 months prior to start of desired programme for programmes in September to February and at least 5 months prior to start of desired programme for programmes in March to August. Applications are to be made in the Goethe Institut (GI) and/or Zentrum Bundesrepublik Deutschland des Internationalen Theaterinstituts (ITI) in respective countries, applications must reach Munich (GI) or Berlin (ITI) by the deadline.

What the grant covers

Visit to theatres assigned or of choice (upon approval) for a period of 3 months, with a possibility of up to 6 months. Integration and mentoring pairing with host theatre.  For visits to other theatres, allowance is given for 2nd class rail travel and theatre tickets if cost is incurred. A stipend of  Euro 780 per month or Euro 26 per day when a full month is not met. Health insurance.


Mastery of the German language. Full personal mentoring is not possible and grantees are expected to demonstrate independence, initiative and an open mind. Integration into the rehearsal process and theatre production is expected as well as communication with fellow colleagues.

Additional info

Interruption and termination to the agreed stay will result in grantee having to return the cost for the flight ticket.
