In conjunction with Malaysia Day which falls on 16 September and in continuation with its 20th anniversary celebration, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is proud to present special showcases themed Semalam Di Malaya (A Night In Malaya) at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on Saturday, 15 September 2018 at 8.30 pm and Sunday, 16 September 2018 at 3.00 pm.

Throughout its 20-year existence, the MPO has stayed true to its commitment to provide the best in classical music in Malaysia’s first concert hall dedicated to that genre. Nonetheless, it has also musically evolved and presented other genres such as pop, jazz, film music, traditional and contemporary that appeal to a wider audience.

In these concerts, the MPO will pay tribute to music icons of yesteryear in music legacies presented in unrivalled symphonic arrangements. The older generation will walk down the memory lane through the rendition of evergreen songs whereas the younger generation will be able to enjoy these treasured legacy in a fresh symphonic orchestral arrangement.

The MPO will present songs that reflect our rich musical heritage and encompass the unifying themes of love, sacrifice and hope. Among the love songs chosen for the repertoire list are Airmata Berderai, Gadis Idaman and Tunas Kasih (composed by Alfonso Soliano), Sayang Di Sayang and Setangkai Kembang Melati (Zubir Said).

Also included are patriotic tunes such as Tanah Pusaka (Ahmad Merican), Putera Puteri (Jimmy Boyle), Perajurit Tanah Air and Berjaya (Saiful Bahri).

The showcases will also present evergreen compositions such as Ibu and Jelingan Manja (Ahmad Jaafar) and P Ramlee’s Hujan Di Tengahari and Joget Malaysia.

All songs are rearranged in its symphonic grandeur by young arrangers such as Leonard Yeap, Luqman Aziz, Syed Sharir Faisal, Jenny Chin and Vivian Chua.

The concerts will feature renowned singers such as Aishah, Liza Hanim, Musly Ramlee and Rachel Guerzo Trio who will showcase their virtuosities.

Prior to this, the MPO has collaborated with Musly in 1999 and Aishah in 2009 at DFP while Rachel, who is Alfonso Soliano’s granddaughter, has presented a solo concert on the same stage in 2010. This will be MPO’s pioneering collaboration with Liza Hanim.

All concerts will be led by Ahmad Muriz Che Rose. The concerts join the rank of a series of traditional concerts presented by the MPO at DFP after Irama Warisan Kita (2009), Keroncong Merdeka (2012) and Malaysia Tanah Airku (2014) which received overwhelming responses.

Be part of this tribute extravaganza as the MPO breathes new life into the timeless classics, only at DFP!
